Bird Watching

Eastham is known for several bird watching hot spots. Of particular interest are Fort Hill overlooking the Great Nauset Marsh, First Encounter Beach with its extensive sand flats, and the Massachusetts Audubon Sanctuary, a reserve encompassing nearly 1,000 acres overlooking Cape Cod Bay from Eastham into Wellfleet.  Each location provides year round access to more than 250 of the most varied bird species in New England.  With access to the Bay, open areas, woodlands, and marsh, many different species are either here year round, go through on migration, or are here for breeding season.  After a large storm in the winter, we frequently see birds who have been blown off course, and we frequently have Snowy Owls as winter guests as well.
